On the start of the 5th day I brought my magician outfit in to be approved by the costume department. When it passed with flying colors, I headed down to my new position in the lobby and waited for the guests. When people started lining up I started into what we call a grind routine where I would perform the same six or seven tricks over and over again without stopping. I performed for five and a half hours straight. We were supposed to get a lunch break, but I guess the people running the event forgot I was out there and I just never got the word to stop and rest. At the end of the night, I packed up and went home, ready to repeat it again the next week.
I’ve done five nights for them now and I can certainly tell you, performing the same six or seven tricks over and over again has made me really good at them. I’ve made some changes, making the magic more Halloween specific, but I’ve gotten to the point now where my hands go on auto-pilot and I concentrate on having fun with the guests (I honestly don’t think I can stop my hands from performing the proper movements). It’s been a great experience, especially since they’ve been remembering to give me a break!
Speaking of breaks, I am on a week break from the haunted house to perform on the Palace of Mystery stage in the Magic Castle, which I will write all about next time!
